News and Views - Welcome to this section of our web site. In this section we will post news on our hounds and other issues which we think may be of interest to bloodhound lovers. Please email us with anything that you feel needs an 'airing' and we may also add those bits in.

2010

The News page has now rolled forward another year - just select 'Latest News for the News and Views menu above.

1st November

Some news in from South Africa and nathan. His winning ways continue as he now has 3 CC's although because of his age only two count towards his Champion status. His own says " He is huge, is an absolute joy, and is duck daft! - toy ducks with quackers in them – we now have six since the quackers don’t last very long!".... The pictures below were taken a few months ago when he was 8 months old..

17th October

Good news this morning from Belgium. Hope (Cilgwri Eternal Star) is continuing her winning ways. In the last few days she has been Best of Breed at the Dortmund Bundesieger Show. And then quickly followed this up with a Best of Opposite Sex at the Dortmund National Show. This means that with the points that she had already won she is now a Junior Champion of Germany. Well done Hope ...and of course Linda.

And also this morning we heard that Thorin (one of Pheobe's children) has just won the Novice event at the Dutch bloodhound club trails - at almost 8 years of age - The veteran winning novice! Congratulations to Thorin and Jan.

13th September

Yet more show successes... Corti won the Puppy dog class at Richmond Show on Friday and then went on to win the Reserve Challenge Certificate.

No sooner than we heard this news than we had a telephone call from Leipzig Show (Germany) where Hope had won her junior bitch class and went on to win Best of Breed with her first CIC (Equivalent of English CC)

And I have had a flea in my ear ("from her indoors") for not mentioning another winner - this time our own Evie won her bitch class Reserve Best Puppy in Show at the ABB Championship Show. We have been biding our time with her as she has been slow to mature and we don't like showing youngsters too early unless they are mature enough - but her time is fast approaching...! Watch this space....! And a picture of Evie to be going on with...

8th September

Is it really over a month since I last posted something on to the site - I can't believe it - it must be the barbeque summer that we have been having (!!!!!) Still there is some news to catch up with.

At the ABB Championship show recently Dusty won the Bitch CC and then went on to be Best of Breed (I think that it's her 11th CC with 7th BoB)

We have just returned for Belgium -- a really quick visit to the St Hubert Show (Belgium Bloodhound Club Championship Show. It was fantastic to see three of our recent litter again - Corti, Hope and Onslow. And we got some great results. Corti was the star with a win over 9 good hounds in Junior Dog and then going on to win Best Junior. The judge said that he has great potential. Hope did just as well coming second in a strong Junior bitch class missing out very narrowly to an older hound (which was then beaten by Corti for Best Junior) - again a fantastic performance for them both in their first shows at just 9 months of age.

Hope in second place Junior Bitch Corti collecting his medal

3rd August Some sad news this morning we have just lost our lovely Grace. At 9.5 years old she together with Phoebe was our oldest hound. Besides winning lots of reserve CC's (Always the bridesmaid) she was also the great mother with two lovely litters to her name. And of course she was the great traveler having traveled on two separate occasions al the way from the UK to Vienna and back by car. We very much miss her.
1st June Great news this morning when we heard from our friend Aine (in Cork - the owner of Phoebe one of Strudels children) that she had had a litter. More news on this litter is on our litters page. This litter is very important as it brings a whole new bloodline into the UK (and the puppies are grandchilredn of Knotty the most successul US Bloodhound ever) and we know that a number of show homes are already expressing an interest. click here for more details.
16th May

Hubert continues his winning ways with news just in from Moscow. He recently attended two shows in Poland. He won BOB in both show, and in the international show in Lodz he won 4th place in the hound group. To add to all his other titles he is now also champion of Poland. In addition he has been very busy with the ladies and has been used three times at stud in recent months - he is obviously proving to be a very very popular hound.

On a sadder note we just had a phone call from Alan Taylor - Ruby (Cilgwri Lady Fleur) died last weekend. She had been diagnosed with cancer and then she bloated and it was decided that the kindest action was to let her go. Ruby has been very successful in the trials and has produced a number of litters including some great hunting hounds - so her bloodline goes on. Thanks to Alan for being a good owner.

4th May

Nice time to catch up - Eileen is away in Switzerland visiting Bri and her hounds. She had a great day out yesterday doing search and rescue with a group of people who gather most Sundays near Bri's to practice. Its a very mixed group in terms of nationality - French, Italian, Germans and Swiss and with Eileen there English as well. It sounded like great fun and very different from the way we trial hounds.

Also received over the week some pictures of a few of the puppies from Strudel's litter now heading towards being 6 months old.

Brother Onslow - trying to eat his sister Hope this weekend in Belgium - obviously she is very tasty!!!

This is Phoebe in Ireland who is rapidly developing her search and rescue skills - this weekend practicing rescuing spaniels at sea... perhaps there is a new sport here?

14th April
Well can you help us solve a little mystery. A very kind person has just sent us a lovely bowl of roses. Unfortunately there was no name on the card that came with the flowers and the florist only knows that it was sent from outside the UK...Any one know who the generous people are?
9th April

Well at long (l...o...n...g...) last I have found some time to look at this web site and have started to make some changes to bring it up to date. (is that cheering I hear in the distance?) You will notice that there have been some changes to the following areas:-

  • New menus
  • Splitting news by years (As the file was getting just to big)
  • I am starting to update the pictures right across the site although this will be an ongoing task.
  • and I have restructured the litters section with some new links and a bit of comment about all the puppies

If anyone spots any errors just let me know - no prizes though as I will claim they were deliberate to test you...

8th April

Time for some good news on the medical front. When we took everyone in for their booster shots a week ago the vet found some large lumps on Phoebe's spleen. He was very concerned as he though they would,be cancerous. She went back in last week to have her spleen removed and the lumps went off for investigation. Yesterday we got the news that there was no problem with them - you can imagine how relieved we felt after the recent run of bad news. Mind you the lumps were the size of a melon and a grapefruit. Lord only knows where she hid them! She is now recovering - or rather she is completely back to normal form despite a major operation only days ago

The Hedgehog Lady

Some very unhappy but sadly not unexpected news.

Many of you will remember Maureen from the Bloodhound Club magazine - she is the lady with the 'Hedgehog Bloodhound puppies' - two very small puppies that she raised by hand - she also rescued and raised hedgehog babies and applied the same loving approach to the bloodhounds. The two hounds did really well under her care with one going on to win Best In Show at the Club Open show last year and the other doing well in the working trials with the Wheelers.

Sadly Maureen died early on Saturday morning after a short but very brave fight against cancer. She and Eileen described themselves as 'sisters' - as they had such similar views on almost everything and got on really well although they only knew each other for a short time. I can still hear them both laughing in our garden last summer.

Our thoughts go to husband Brian and the children and also to John who kept one of the Hedgehog puppies (Dr Watson) at his home with Watson's mother (Clouseau) and is himself like a son to Maureen and Brian.

30th March

We have had so many enquires about how the man in the picture (Colin) with the big hound is getting on I just have to put up a picture of Courti just received from Colin and Ruth. He is now outgrowing his bed ..Seriously he is quite big just not that big...!

21st March

Firstly a hugh thank you to all the callers and mailers expressing their sadness over Clemmie's death. it is still very difficult for us but the messages and comments have helped a lot thank you.

And the bad news I am afraid does not end there. Scooby Doo (Grace's child, Ellie-May's 'big' brother), sadly died a few days ago quietly in his sleep aged 6.5 yrs. Right up to end he was fine with only one day when he seemed a little out of sorts. Scooby was living with the Wheelers for the last year after he came back to us from his original owners. He has spent the last year running with various litters of hounds and generally enjoying life amidst a large number of hounds. We would very much like to thank Sue and Nick every so much for their kindness towards him and the lovely letter they sent telling us of his last few weeks and months.

On a happier note - a lovely email from one of our new puppy owners (new to us but an experienced Bloodhound person)

Extract from an email from Onslow’s (One of Strudel’s puppies) owner - Gea

Tuesday evening we had another lesson with Onslow. It was a general repetition of all the things he had learnt before - attention to me, sit down, follow etc.

And there was a kind of agility circuit.

Start with a slant board, walking over a shelf above the ground and halfway remain there for a while, sit down and then continue.

Three times jump a hurdle, though a seer pipe, an other hurdle and again through a trunk. At the end he had to jump on a low table, there he had to sit, down and stay.

He loved it!!!

He did everything well and wanted to continue.

So never say a Bloodhound can’t learn; he learns really as fast as any other dog.

Next time – Saturday is the exam!

And last but by no means least an update on 'International Champion' - Hubert in Russia plus a few lovely pictures taken at BIG (Eurasia) the biggest Show in Russia at which Hubert won the Bloodhound Class and went on to win the hound group.

18th March

The very saddest of news today I am afraid. A few hours ago we lost our lovely Clemmie

Today was her 4 month old birthday. Clemmie has a very very special part in our heart and we are really missing her. She was the life and soul of all the action here for the last few months - always the instigator of trouble with her brothers and sisters and always up to her neck in every action. She ran and ran and played and played for every moment of her short but very full and happy life. She was the little girl that everyone who visited us fell in love with. She was one of those rare people that was full of life and loved every minute of it she was a real gift from god. We miss her dreadfully.

17th January

Colin appears to have his hands full with his new puppy which he and Ruth picked up this morning. Eileen and I are sad to see this perfect gentleman (the puppy not Colin!) go to his new home but are also delighted that he will be living with his dad.

6th February 2009

Can't believe its February already. Everything has sort of (!!!!) settled down after the puppy rush... The last one arrived at his new home in Johannesburg early this morning - Tin Man now called Nathan had a great journey and settled in at once with no signs of distress of any sort from his long....long journey. Unlike me, Eileen, Ruth and Colin who were awake all of last night worrying about everything. Ruth and Colin will actually see him very soon as they plan to stop off on their way home from holiday. We are promised pictures of the sun...Oh! - I am reminded - also of Nathan.

This leaves us with just 4 at home - two of ours the one belonging to Colin and Ruth and one waiting fro the builders to finish his new home in Dublin. They will all finally be at their new homes by 20th February.

More news as and when...
